The Kuttambalam is a temple theater, constructed in a traditional Kerala architectural style. It features a sloping roof covered with terracotta tiles, wooden structures, and intricate carvings, reflecting the region’s architectural heritage.

The pillars of the Kuttambalam are made of black granite, with 108 karanas (dance poses) specified in the Natyasastra carved into them.
Sacred Space:
Kuttambalams are considered sacred spaces where traditional temple arts, especially Koodiyattam and other classical performances, are held. This imbues the space with a spiritual significance.

The design of the Kuttambalam ensures close interaction between the performers and the audience. The space is typically small and intimate, enhancing the immersive experience of the performances.

The construction of the Kuttambalam, with its wooden interiors and specific design elements, provides excellent acoustics, crucial for the traditional performances that rely heavily on sound, such as the chanting, drumming, and vocal performances.

The stage area (Rangam) is distinct, with a specially designed floor that aids in the intricate footwork of classical dance forms. There may also be designated spaces for musicians and drummers.
